Activities are underway to mark the 67th Anniversary of the victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi German (May 9th, 1945), highlighted by a military parade in Red Square in the capital city of Moscow. War veterans and youth organizations yesterday laid wreaths at the graves of unknown soldiers at the Kremlin, the statue of marshal Georgy Zhukov, and the Hero of Moscow monument. Veterans attended a special concert to commemorate the victory over Fascism. Russia’s new President Vladimir Putin offered congratulations to leaders of the Commonwealth of Independent States (SNG), Abkhazia, and South Ossetia, and civilians of Gruzia on the 67th anniversary of the end of the Great Patriotic War. Putin praised the resolute determination and heroism of the soldiers and expressed his hope for future cooperation with these nations.
In a speech to war veterans and the Russian people, President Putin said that the Russian people must always remember the great victory and develop patriotism and national pride in the younger generations. He also confirmed the determination of Russia’s Government and people to ensure lasting peace: "By strictly observing international laws, respecting the sovereignty of states and the independent choices made by the people can guarantee that the tragedy of war will never be repeated. Russia pursues a policy for world peace and security and we have right to confirm our stance because we had gone through the harshest trials, defined the outcome of the war. We have a future and we will do all that we can to make it peaceful and safe".
