Following the meeting in Brussels, Russian Permanent Representative to NATO Alexander Grushko said the two sides discussed implementation of the Minsk peace deal. He said the deal requires several mechanisms, including the Normandy Quartet, the Trilateral Contact Group, and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
Mr. Grushko said there haven’t been any Russian military activities in Ukraine and that the solution to the political crisis there depends on how the Kiev authorities perform the agreed steps. He called measures taken by NATO in the eastern area inappropriate and counterproductive, adding that the alliance is returning to the Cold War period and that a confrontational model won’t intimidate Russia.
The same day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow is ready to cooperate with NATO within the framework of the 1997 NATO-Russia Founding Act. He said NATO should take steps to restore their relations, because Russia has not stopped cooperating in fighting terrorism nor supporting Afghanistan’s security forces in confronting the Islamic State and other extremist groups.
