Russia and the US signed the New START in 2010. In February 2021, the two sides extended the treaty to another five years until February 5, 2026. Last month, the Kremlin told the United States that time was running out to negotiate a replacement for the "New START" nuclear arms reduction treaty and that if it expired in 2026 without a replacement then global security would be weakened.
