Russian parliament approves suspension of New START treaty

(VOVWORLD) - The Russian Federation Council (Senate) approved on Wednesday a bill to suspend Russia’s membership in the New START nuclear treaty.

Earlier the same day, the lower chamber of the Russian parliament, the State Duma, approved the bill after it was presented by President Putin the day before. The bill will take effect at the time of its official announcement. A decision to restore Russia's membership in New START can only be made by the Russian President.

Asked in what circumstances Russia would return to the deal, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said everything will depend on the position of the West, adding that when there's a willingness to take into account Russia’s concerns, then the situation will change.

The same day, US President Joe Biden reassured NATO allies. During talks with NATO allies in Warsaw, Poland, Biden affirmed the US’s commitment to the security of NATO members, citing Article 5, which stipulates that an attack on any member of NATO is an attack on all, requiring a joint response. Several leaders participating in the meeting asked the US to continue providing military support to Ukraine.
