During a phone talk with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Thursday, Mr. Putin said that Russia’s latest move was to support the plan for sending an international monitoring mission to Kiev. Speaking on Thursday following a meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the organization’s chairman, Thomas Greminger, said Russia backed the idea of deploying an OSCE monitoring mission in Ukraine, including the autonomous region of Crimea.
Regarding US and Russian differences over the Ukrainian situation, Chairman of the Council of the Russian Federation, Valentina Matviyenko, said Russia would continue to negotiate with the US and the EU on a peaceful solution for the Ukraine, including a meeting in London, England, on Friday between Russian envoy Sergrey Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry. He stressed that any issues related to Ukraine must be solved with the participation of Russia, as the two countries share a 2,000 kilometer long border and must fulfill its commitments in line with agreements reached during the Soviet era.
The UN Security Council on Thursday began an urgent meeting on the Ukrainian situation with the participation of the Ukraine’s caretaker Prime Minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk.
In another development, the International Monetary Fund and the US on Thursday stated their readiness to negotiate on an aid package for the acting government in Kiev.
