The search, in its ninth day, involves 60 ships and 20 aircraft from Indonesia, the US, Russia, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and India. The search area is about 90 nautical miles off the coast of Borneo island in the Java Sea, where five large pieces of plane debris were found. Thirty-four bodies – mostly Indonesian passengers and the crew – have been recovered. However, the black box flight recorders have not yet been found.

Black boxes can normally send out signals for 30 days after an aircraft has an accident. AirAsia Flight QZ8501, carrying 162 passengers and crew, crashed into the Java Sea on December 28 on its way to Singapore after departing from Indonesia’s Surabaya airport.
