Search resumes for the missing Malaysian plane, target area changed

(VOVworld)- Search activities for the missing Malaysian plane resumed on Friday thanks to better weather conditions with the target areas changed significantly. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said in its latest media release on Friday that the search would shift to an area 1,100 km to the northeast of the current search area after it was provided with a new credible lead.

The new information is based on continuing analysis of radar data between the East Sea and the Strait of Malacca, before radar contact was lost. The release said it indicated that the aircraft was travelling faster than previously estimated, resulting in increased fuel usage and reducing the possible distance the aircraft travelled south into the Indian Ocean. The information was released one day after Thailand announced that one of its satellites had spotted 300 items floating in the south Indian Ocean. The Japanese government on Friday also said that its satellite analysis indicated 10 square-shaped items of 8 m length and 4m width were floating in the same area. The Japanese media quoted a government official as saying that these might be debris from the missing plane.
Friday's air search of the southern Indian Ocean for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 involves a total of 10 aircrafts and 5 ships from 6 countries.
