During their talks, the two leaders agreed to promote the organization of a trilateral summit between South Korea, Japan, and China.
Currently, South Korea holds the Chairmanship of the South Korea-Japan-China summit, and Seoul is pushing for the summit to take place later this year. If it proceeds, this will be their first trilateral summit in four years.
At the first trilateral summit in 2008, the leaders of the three countries agreed to hold an annual meeting and take turns chairing it. However, since the recent meeting in China in December, 2019, no further meetings have been held due to the COVID-19 pandemic and controversies surrounding wartime issues, which have led to Japan-South Korea relations reaching their lowest point in many years.
