South Sudan government commits to honor peace deal

(VOVworld) - James Pitia Morgan, South Sudan's permanent representative to the African Union, said Thursday that the South Sudanese government is committed to the peace agreement signed last August 2015 to end two years of civil war.  In an interview on the sidelines of the 27th AU Summit in Rwanda, Morgan said the South Sudanese government has agreed to honor the deal and welcomes the return of the opposition.

Morgan urged the opposition to cooperate with the government as stipulated in the peace deal. He emphasized that South Sudan’s future depends on its people and called on the international community to increase pressure on the opposition led by First Deputy President Riek Machar to cooperate with the government

The civil war began in December 2013 when South Sudan President Kiir accused Machar of plotting a coup, which was denied by Machar. Tens thousands people have been killed over the past 2 years, nearly 3 million have been displaced, and more than 5 million rely on emergency aid.
