Sri Lanka acting President declares state of emergency
(VOVWORLD) - Sri Lanka’s acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe has declared a state of emergency, according to a government notice released late on Sunday, as his administration seeks to quell social unrest and tackle an economic crisis gripping the island nation.

Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as acting president after the speaker of the parliament accepted a resignation letter sent by embattled President Gotabaya Rajapaksa after he fled the country.
According to Sri Lanka's parliament’s speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, nominations for the next president will be presented to parliament on Tuesday and on Wednesday parliament will vote to elect a new president.
