Speaking to the press on Tuesday about Syria’s proposal, Director-General of Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Ahmet Uzumcu said he is optimistic about the plan. But Ahmet Uzumcu said it is at the end of June or later that all the weapons can be totally destroyed after they are transported out of Syria. The OPCW’s governing body will take into consideration of Syria’s proposal. After failing to meet a February 5th deadline, Syria submitted a new 100-day plan for the removal of its chemical weapons which is expected to finish at the end of May. This will be not enough time to meet the deadline for destruction of chemical arsenals scheduled to be completed in late June. OPCW and the United Nations are continuing to put pressure to shorten the time of removal of Syria’s chemical weapons.
