(VOVworld) – Thailand’s military detained former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra after summoning her for talks.

Following a military coup on Thursday to topple Yingluck’s administration, the Thai army summoned more than 100 senior officials, including cabinet members and opposition leaders. The army said this is to protect people’s lives, prevent an escalating conflict, and to bring Thailand’s current situation back to normal as soon as possible. According to the ex-premier’s aide Wim Rungwattanachinda, Yingluck and a number of officials came to an army base outside Bangkok on Friday. Wim said 30 minutes later, Yingluck left the base and was taken by soldiers to a secret army location. Media said Yingluck is detained in a military base in Saraburi, northern Bangkok.

A number of officials who presented themselves before the army are also detained. They included Puea Thai Party’s Secretary General Pumtham Vejjachai and its spokesperson Prompong Nopparit, and protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban.
