(VOVworld) – The US welcomes China’s withdrawal of its oil rig Haiyang 981 from Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf. US State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki made the statement at a press briefing on Thursday:“We welcome China’s announcement that it’s moving its oil rig from its location near the Paracels to an area closer to Hainan Island. The oil rig incident highlighted need for claimants to clarify their claims in accordance to international law to reach the shared understanding on appropriate behavior and activities in disputed areas.”

Psaki said that the US supports parties concerned in voluntarily stopping unilateral provocative actions aiming to accelerate the implementation of the 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea signed by China and ASEAN.
Regarding the US stance on the Chinese Government announcing its continued exploration activities in disputed areas, the spokesperson said the US has national interests in maintaining peace and stability and respecting international law and legitimate commercial activities and freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea.
