The contact between the two leaders was the first since diplomatic and trade relations turned icy last December after Canadian police arrested Huawei Technologies Co Ltd Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou on a US warrant. The information was announced at the time Canada – China relations was at its worst since the two countries established their diplomatic relation in 1970. The relationship unravelled further with the detainment of two Canadians in China on accusations of espionage. China also blocked shipments of Canadian canola and other farm products.
