Turkey warns Germany over bill on Armenian mass killings

(VOVworld) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned Tuesday that the German Parliament’s approval of a bill calling Turkey’s 1915 mass killing of Armenians genocide could damage Germany-Turkey relations.

Mr. Erdogan lashed out at those who, he said, are trying to deceive Germany about the 1915 event and said if Germany is deceived by the 1915 mass killing, the bilateral diplomatic, economic, trade, political, and military ties between Germany and Turkey could be ruined.

The statements came after a phone call between Mr. Erdogan and German Chancellor Angela Merkel to discuss an EU-Turkey deal to ease the migrant crisis in the EU, during which Mr. Erdogan expressed his objection to the resolution.

In June, the German Parliament plans to vote on a resolution labeling the killing of some 1.5 million Armenians during the Ottoman Empire “genocide”, which Turkey strongly rejects.
