(VOVworld) – A day after shooting down a Russian jet at the Syrian border for violating Turkish airspace, Ankara appeared to be trying to defuse tension with Moscow, with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stressing that Turkey doesn't want an escalation of the incident. On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu spoke on the phone to discuss the incident. Lavrov, who canceled a visit to Turkey scheduled for Wednesday, said the downing of the Russian Su-24 at the Turkish-Syrian border on Tuesday was a "planned provocation". He warned that this act by Turkey will have serious consequences for Russian-Turkish relations and will not go unanswered. Lavrov said that terrorists are using Turkish territory to prepare attacks in Syria.
