(VOVworld) – The U Minh Thuong National Park in the southern province of Kien Giang on Monday received a UNESCO certificate as an ASEAN Heritage Park. The park is surrounded by a 60-kilometer closed levee. Among alum eco-systems in the Mekong River Delta, only the core zone of the U Minh Thuong National Park retains characteristics of a primeval forest including 3,000 hectares of mixed mangrove forests and mangrove forests on peatlands.

The forest used to be a military base during Vietnam’s wars. So the U Minh Thuong National Park features not only a typical peatlands ecosystem but also a historical relic.
