(VOVworld) – The UK upgraded the status of the Syrian opposition office in London to a “mission”, said UK Foreign Secretary William Hague on Thursday.

Following a meeting of the “Friends of Syria” in London, Hague said the status of the Syrian National Coalition office in London has been upgraded to firmly recognise their partnership. The group “Friends of Syria” has unanimously decided to increase their support for the Syrian moderate opposition, including the Syrian National Coalition, its Supreme Military Council and associated moderate armed groups. The UK has promised to aid 50 million USD to these groups.
The group “Friends of Syria”, which includes Egypt, France, Italy, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the UK, and the US, was founded in 2012, after Russia and China vetoed UN resolutions on Syria.
