UN concerned over security situation in Haiti

(VOVWORLD)-UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday expressed deep concerns regarding the deteriorating security situation in Haiti.

Guterres underscored the urgent need for action, including providing financial support for a UN-led multinational security mission in Haiti.

On Monday, the Canadian and Spanish embassies in Haiti announced a temporary closure and cancellation of all meetings for security reasons, following the closure of the US and French embassies. Spain has advised its citizens in Haiti to restrict their movement and gather essential supplies.

Several airlines including American Airlines, JetBlue, and Spirit Airlines, have suspended flights to Haiti.

The Organization of American States has called for efforts by the UN to restore security in Haiti.

On Saturday night criminal gangs attacked Haiti’s National Prison, resulting in the death of at least 10 individuals and the release of thousands of prisoners.

In response to this crisis, the Haitian government declared a state of emergency and imposed a curfew between 6:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.
