(VOVworld)- UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon called on Europe not to seek a military solution to illegal immigration, a week after nearly 800 people drowned in a shipwreck on April 18 during a dangerous seaborne migration across the Mediterranean Sea. In an interview with Italian newspaper La Stampa, Ban said the United Nations is ready to cooperate with the EU to tackle the problem.
Mr. Ban hailed the EU’s 10-point plan for dealing with the migrant crisis, considered an initial step towards collective action. Ban and other officials including Federica Mogherini, the EU's foreign policy chief and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, were on a boat in the Mediterranean on Monday to express solidarity with the families of the drowning victims.
