(VOVWORLD) - The United Nations said Friday that it was very concerned about the escalation after US and British warplanes, ships, and submarines conducted dozens of airstrikes across Yemen overnight in retaliation for Houthi forces for months of attacks on shipping vessels passing through the Red Sea.

Spokesperson for the UN Secretary General Stephane Dujarric said, “We are just extremely worried about the risks and the greater risks of escalation of this, and with the impact on the wider region. The Secretary-General further calls upon all parties involved not to escalate even more the situation in the interest of peace and stability in the Red Sea and the wider region.”
Early Friday, witnesses confirmed explosions at military bases near the airport in the capital of Sanaa and Taiz, Yemen's third largest city, a naval base at the Yemeni Red Sea port of Hodeidah, and military sites in the coastal province of Hajjah.
Houthi force said its 5 gunmen were killed in 73 US-UK airstrikes. Houthi leaders vowed to retaliate against the West with attacks in the Red Sea.
