The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said on September 30th that the Israeli army informed them of its intention to conduct limited ground offensives in Lebanon and requested the UNIFIL to leave some positions. But the UN peacekeepers have remained at their stations.

UNIFIL said that it regularly reviews its operations and has contingency plans to be activated if necessary.

UNIFIL has been operating in southern Lebanon for 28 years under UN Resolution 425 to monitor a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.

The ceasefire agreement has frayed since late last year, when Hezbollah stepped up attacks on northern Israel in support of the Hamas Islamist movement in the Gaza Strip.

Clashes between Hezbollah and the Israeli army have escalated and are occurring almost daily.
