Chairman Hue said the UN should continue to promote international peace and security and respect for international law, and help countries implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Ms. Waly affirmed the UN’s commitment to cooperating with Vietnam, and said the UN will increase its cooperation with parliaments, including the Vietnamese National Assembly. She said she supports the proposal Vietnam made at the UN Security Council’s online debate on maritime security to establish a network of regional maritime security mechanisms and initiatives coordinated by the UN. She affirmed the UN's readiness to assist Vietnam in ensuring maritime security.
At a meeting with Puan Maharani, Speaker of the Indonesian People's Representative Council, Mr. Hue suggested Vietnam and Indonesia coordinate on trade and asked Indonesia to make it easier for Vietnam to export farm produce and step up negotiations on demarcation of exclusive economic zones.
He underscored ASEAN’s central role in maintaining peace, stability, security, and maritime and aviation safety and freedom. He called for prompt completion of a practical and effective Code of Conduct in the East Sea in line with international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
