(VOVWORLD) - UN Secretary-General António Guterres has said the world must focus on ending the pandemic by providing vaccines, medical equipment, and treatment to everyone.

At the opening ceremony of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, Guterres called for an end to wars around the world with the world facing challenges and divisions in so many areas, particularly the gap between the rich and the poor, between those who enjoy the best material conditions and those who lack basic needs like food, water, and medical care.
He underlined the huge disparity between those who have already been vaccinated and millions of others who have no access to a COVID-19 vaccine because of barriers created by the current economic system.
He insisted that today's challenges can be met if only UN members would unite and cooperate in a spirit of multilateralism. Greater efforts are needed, he said, to achieve the sustainable development goals set by the UN.
