The sanctions focus on coal exports, one of North Korea’s largest sources of income.
The new resolution will cut North Korea’s coal exports by more than 60%. Copper, nickel, silver, and zinc will also be added to the list of prohibited exports.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he hopes that the unanimous approval of the UN Security Council will create sufficient pressure to force North Korea to return to the 6-party negotiations.
