UN Security Council to meet over Trump's controversial Mideast plan
(VOVWORLD) - The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to meet next week to discuss the US-proposed Middle East peace plan, diplomatic sources said on Sunday.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israel's ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon are expected to attend the meeting. Last Tuesday, US President Donald Trump revealed his 80-page controversial Middle East peace plan, calling for a two-state solution while recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's "undivided capital."
A UN spokesman said that the position of the United Nations on the two-state solution of Israel and Palestine has been defined, throughout the years, by relevant Security Council and General Assembly resolutions.
Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations Riyad Mansour said that Trump's plan "will fail." Speaking to reporters at the UN headquarters in New York, Mr. Mansour criticized the plan, saying it is an attempt to destroy the national rights of the Palestinian people.
In an emergency meeting at the Arab League (AL) headquarters in Cairo on Saturday, Arab foreign ministers unanimously agreed to boycott the US plan and not to cooperate "in any way" with Washington during its implementation.
