(VOVworld) – UN-Arab League special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi on Saturday began his visits to the Middle East and North Africa to call for a support for holding an international conference on Syria called “Geneva 2”. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Brahimi’s spokesperson Khawla Mattar said the special envoy will travel to Egypt, the first leg of the regional tour. The Syrian opposition has not yet decided to take part in the so-called “Geneva 2” conference, which is scheduled on November 23rd and 24th in Geneva, Switzerland. The National Coalition, Syria’s main opposition bloc, put forward a condition to participate the conference that the government of Syrian President Al Assad will have no position in the future government. Iran’s participation is a controversial issue. The US, some Western countries, and the Syrian opposition do not want Iran’s presence at the conference. Meanwhile, Russia and Syria said that Iran should raise its voice at the Syrian conference with its important role in the region.
