(VOVworld) - US Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said Tuesday that Britain and the EU should both show flexibility when London negotiates its future relationship with the EU.

He told reporters after his meeting with French Finance Minister Michel Sapin in Paris that it is important that both sides demonstrate flexibility in order to produce an amicable and mutually-acceptable outcome and negotiations should take place in a smooth, pragmatic, and transparent manner.

France is pressing Britain to quickly enter formal negotiations with the EU about its departure in order to reduce the uncertainty created by the referendum.

Last month, Britain voted to leave the EU, provoking debates on the future of the EU, in particular whether the EU should expand or narrow down.
