A Republican majority in the House of Representatives means that Republicans will choose the next Speaker of the House. Most likely Kevin McCarthy will replace the current Speaker Democratic Nancy Pelosi.
Catherine Cortez Masto’s victory in Nevada gave Democrats the 50 seats they needed to keep control of the 100-seat Senate. Georgia will hold a run-off election to decide who will be the 100th Senator, but the outcome is less important to the Democrats now that they already have 50 seats.
Vice President Kamala Harris, a Democrat, gets to cast the deciding vote if the Senate splits 50-50.
