The US continues to believe that a diplomatic resolution is achievable because no one truly wants a full-scale war between Lebanon and Israel, Hochstein said after talks with Lebanon'sparliament speaker Nabih Berri. Hochstein added that a deal would also enable a diplomatic resolution in Lebanon that would prevent the outbreak of a wider war.
Hochstein's visit comes a day before Hamas and Israel are scheduled to resume ceasefire talks. Hochstein is also due to meet with Lebanese prime minister Najib Mikati and foreign minister Abdullah Bou Habib.
Hamas continues to insist that it will not pursue negotiations based on new proposals put forward by Israel to prolong the war. A top Hamas official said Hamas is losing faith in the United States’ ability to mediate a cease-fire in Gaza.Osama Hamdan said Hamas will only participate if the talks focus on a ceasefire based on proposals put forward by US President Joe Biden in late May and endorsed internationally.
