(VOVWORLD) - US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Iraq’s leaders in Baghdad that Washington supports Iraq to guarantee security, safety, and prosperity for its citizens.

He had separate meetings with President Barham Salid, Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi, Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi, and Foreign Minister Mohammed al-Hakim. Secretary Pompeo also visited the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region on Wednesday, aiming to reassure its leaders about Washington’s plans following President Trump’s surprise announcement last month of an abrupt withdrawal from Syria.
He affirmed that Iraq is an important economic, political, and strategic partner in United States security.
