US President to consider lifting arms embargo on Vietnam
(VOVworld) – On Monday, US officials said President Barack Obama is considering lifting the US’s arms embargo on Vietnam, which has been in place for more than 3 decades. Discussions on the issue are taking place ahead of his visit to Vietnam in May, which is intended to improve bilateral ties. The removal of the ban will erase the last trace of the Vietnam War and promote relations between the two countries. In 2007, Washington loosened the sales of lethal weapons and military services to Vietnam under on specific circumstances. However, it continues to maintain the ban on the export and transfer of lethal weapons to Vietnam. Many US congressmen have called on the government to consider lifting the embargo. The US government expects to receive support from the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee Senator John McCain, who supported the removal of a part of the ban on the sales of lethal weapons to Vietnam in 2014.
