US suspends military and financial aids to Egypt
(VOVworld) - Washington says it has stopped shipments of major military hardware and halted 260 million USD in cash aid to Egypt's military leaders; said US state department spokesperson Jen Psaki on Thursday. However, Psaki added that such move would not be permanent and it would remain in place pending credible progress toward an inclusive, democratically-elected civilian government through free and fair elections. US officials said the decision will prevent deliveries of big-ticket items, including Apache helicopters, F-16 fighter jets, M1A1 Abrams tank parts and Harpoon missiles, but aid remains for healthcare, education, anti-terrorism, and border security purposes. The US provides a total of 1.5-billion USD in annual aid to Egypt, most of which is dedicated to the army with military equipment and training worth around 1.3 billion USD.
