Trump told reporters, “We're going to charge countries for doing business in our country, taking our jobs, taking our wealth, taking a lot of things that they've been taking over the years. They've taken so much out of our country and what we're going to be doing is a 25% tariff on all cars that are not made in the United States.”
“If they’re made in the United States, this is absolutely no tariffs. We start off with a 2.5% base to 25%,” Trump added.
Japan, South Korea, and Germany are likely to be the most affected countries.
Trump had hinted at automobile levies earlier and said this will not be the last round of tariffs. He also mentioned import duties on semiconductors and wood. The Trump administration is expected to introduce reciprocal tariffs on each of the US's trading partners on April 2.
