During his first press briefing in his ambassadorial term on Wednesday, Knapper said that the US wants to grasp all opportunities towards the future with Vietnam. He said both countries have made progress in all areas of cooperation, including trade, investment, energy, healthcare, maritime security, cultural and people exchanges.

He cited a foundation for further development in bilateral ties, including the settlement of war remaining issues, detoxification of dioxin hotpots, landmine clearance and searching for those missing in action from both sides.

Knapper expected Vietnam’s more cooperation with other partners in new economic initiatives, climate and energy as well as carbon neutrality.

He said his priorities include an upgrade of bilateral diplomatic ties and more trust building with Vietnam for more cooperation in multiple areas.
