Vietnam, Australia deepen strategic partnership

(VOVWORLD) -Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang and Governor-General of Australia Peter Cosgrove held talks in Hanoi on Thursday after a welcoming ceremony.

At the talks, both sides agreed on widespread activities to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Vietnam-Australia diplomatic ties. They pledged to consolidate political trust via exchange of visits and contacts, enhance the efficiency of the existing bilateral cooperative mechanism, and establish new frameworks such as partnership in economics, agriculture, and innovation and a foreign minister meeting. Both sides stressed the need to boost friendship activities and deepen key cooperation areas like security-defense, economics-trade, science-technology, education-training, and development assistance.

In addition to bilateral cooperation, the Vietnamese and Australian leaders reiterated their support for each other at regional and global forums, including the UN, ASEAN, and ASEAN-led mechanisms. Both sides will coordinate their viewpoints on the East Sea issues and work closely with each other in implementing the Comprehensive Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

Afterwards, both leaders co-chaired a press conference, where President Quang said Vietnam treasures friendship and cooperation with Australia. He called for more regular exchanges of visits at all levels, further cooperation between localities, and people-to-people diplomacy. Mr. Quang said: “Both sides will seriously consider trade barriers that may hinder their exports, encourage businesses to invest in each other’s countries, and create a breakthrough in trade and investment. Vietnam applauds Australia for continued provision of ODA for Vietnam. Both sides will forge closer ties and promote mutual understanding in education-training, culture, sports, tourism, and labor.  

 Governor-General Cosgrove expressed his pleasure at his first visit to Vietnam, adding that the trip amid the 45th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties is also an occasion for the two countries to move towards new frameworks in their strategic partnership.

The same day, President Tran Dai Quang and his wife hosted a banquet in honor of Governor-General of Australia Peter Cosgrove and his wife.

Earlier in the morning, the Governor-General laid a wreath at the Monument to Heroic Martyrs and paid tribute to President Ho Chi Minh at the Vietnamese late leader’s mausoleum in Hanoi.
