Vietnam, Australia upgrade ties to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

(VOVWORLD) -Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese agreed to upgrade Vietnam-Australia relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, as they held talks in Canberra on Thursday.

At the talks, the two PMs agreed to work closely together to make the two countries’ cooperation more effective and substantive. The directions discussed include higher political trust and more strategic diplomacy, more inclusive, substantive and effective economic, trade, and investment cooperation, and stronger science-technology cooperation, innovation, digital transformation, and green transformation. They stressed the need to understand, sympathize and share more about national defense and security cooperation. On this occasion, Vietnam and Australia issued a Joint Statement on the two countries upgrading their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Talking the press after the talks, Prime Minister Albanese said that the upgrade of  relations aims to deepen cooperation in climate change combat, energy transition, digital transformation, innovation, trade and investment, agriculture, national defense, education, and training. Vietnam and Australia boost trade and investment cooperation for their economic prosperity and enhance cooperation in education-training, labor and employment. They agreed to a partnership agreement on peacekeeping and raise the level of security dialogue between Vietnam and Australia to the ministerial level.

Prime Minister Chinh said the two sides agreed to continue to coordinate and support each other at multilateral forums, especially the UN and ASEAN. They voiced their hope that conflicts around the world will soon be resolved by peaceful means, with increased humanitarian aid, not using force or threatening to use force, and complying with international law and the UN chapter, aimed at protecting people, leaving no one behind.

On the East Sea issue, the two sides reaffirmed the importance of ensuring peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea and resolve disputes by peaceful means on the basis of international law. They agreed to exchange, share information and strengthen cooperation, striving to turn the East Sea into a sea of peace, stability, friendship, cooperation and comprehensive development.

The two sides agreed to create favorable conditions and ensure legal and legitimate rights and interests for people and businesses of the two countries to live, work and study in each other’s country.

Earlier, the Australian and Vietnamese Prime Ministers witnessed the signing and handing over of 11 cooperation documents between the two countries.
