Vietnam chairs UNSC open debate on mine action
(VOVWORLD) - Vietnamese Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son on Thursday chaired a United Nations Security Council open debate via videoconference on “Mine action and sustaining peace: Stronger partnerships for better delivery.”

In his address, Mr. Son shared Vietnam’s experience and stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation with international partners in mine action.
The meeting adopted a presidential statement initiated by Vietnam that calls on all stakeholders to work harder to implement resolution 2365 on mine action.
Ilene Cohn, Officer-in-Charge of the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS), said on the sideline of the conference that Vietnam has made much progress on mine action, but there remains much to do to rid the world of lethal weapons.
Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN said that the UXO issue has rarely been discussed at the UNSC, as it was not supported by countries’ previous policies. Vietnam’s chairing of a debate on mine action raises international concern.
