The 4th European Commission inspection pointed out problems to be solved including fleet management, monitoring, inspection, control of fishing vessel operations, law enforcement and handling of administrative violations.
To address these problems, the Vietnam Coast Guard set up a Joint Command Headquarter in Ba Ria-Vung Tau to oversee and guide forces combating IUU fishing.
During the campaign until the end of April, these forces will concentrate on preventing Vietnamese fishing vessels from trespassing into foreign waters. They will promote policies and laws and encourage legal compliance by fishermen.
Lieutenant General Bui Quoc Oai, Political Commissar of the Vietnam Coast Guard, said, "This trip focuses on patrolling, inspecting, and monitoring fishing activities and assessing the engagement of businesses and organizations in IUU practices. It will evaluate how nine specific forces are responding to IUU violations."
