Vietnam emphasises necessity of eliminating nuclear weapons
(VOVWORLD) - The total elimination of nuclear weapons is in the common interest of humankind and requires the effort and political determination of every country, said Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, at the second meeting of parties to the Treaty on Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

Addressing the 5-day meeting in New York, Mr. Giang called on member countries to fulfill their obligations under the treaty, and non-member countries to join the treaty and make it universal.He reaffirmed Vietnam’s consistent policy of backing non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament toward a nuclear-weapon-free world.
Vietnam was one of the first 10 countries to ratify the treaty. In 2019 the Vietnamese Government issued Decree 81 establishing a national legal framework for preventing weapons of mass destruction.
The Treaty on Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is the first multilateral nuclear disarmament treaty to take effect since 1990. For the first time in history the document sets out comprehensive legally binding obligations for member states to completely ban the possession, development, storage, or use of nuclear weapons. The treaty was adopted at the UN Conference to negotiate binding legal documents banning and working toward the complete elimination of nuclear weapons held in New York from June 15 to July 7, 2017. It came into force on January 22, 2021. 93 countries have signed the treaty, and 69 countries have ratified it.
