Mr. Phuc said climate change is undoubtedly a major existential threat to the planet  and as a country severely affected by climate change, Vietnam commits to take drastic and comprehensive actions to mitigate climate change, including reducing emissions by 9% with domestic resources and by 27% with bilateral and multilateral support.

Vietnam has launched a program to plant a billion trees by 2025, according to President Phuc.

"Developed countries should continue to take the lead in emission reduction, and at the same time give greater concrete support to developing countries, including Vietnam, in finance, new technology development, high-quality and efficient infrastructure and job creation," said Mr. Phuc.

"The pursuit of climate goals should be compatible with each country’s conditions, including the need to alter lifestyles, modes of production and work. This endeavor must be integrated into national development strategies and plans. Each country must itself make efforts and make good use of international aid and resources."

President Phuc was among 41 world leaders invited to the summit, which underscored the urgency and the economic benefits of stronger climate action.
