He acknowledged progress in South Sudan’s transition this year, as it marks its 10th anniversary of independence and the 3rd anniversary of the Peace Agreement. He called on concerned parties to continue to fully implement the Peace Agreement in anticipation of elections in 2023.
The members of the UN Committee on South Sudan thanked Vietnam and Vietnamese Ambassador to the UN Dang Dinh Quy for their contributions while Vietnam chaired the Committee over the past 2 years.
As Chair of the Committee, Vietnam held 5 meetings and organized field trips to South Sudan to observe the implementation of the Peace Agreement and review the arms embargo mechanism under Security Council Resolution 2577, creating a basis for the Security Council to consider the mechanism next year.
