Vietnam supports building a Global Treaty on Plastic Pollution

(VOVWORLD) -Vietnam, an active and responsible member of the Partnership in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA), strongly supports negotiations for the Global Treaty on Plastic Pollution.

By participating in building the agreement, Vietnam and other countries will show solidarity to address the global problem of plastic waste pollution, according the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

Truong Duc Tri, Deputy Director of the Department of Vietnam’s Seas and Islands, underlined Vietnam’s stance at a conference on regional cooperation towards the Global Treaty on Plastic Pollution in Hanoi on Wednesday.

Mr. Tri said that the Vietnamese government consider marine and island environment protection important, especially issues related to marine biodiversity conservation and the impact of plastic waste in the ocean.

He called on coastal countries to make greater efforts to solve urgent marine environmental problems, effectively implement the Sustainable Development Strategy for the Seas of East Asia and other regional programs on marine environmental protection, and take actions towards responsible ocean governance and mutual development.

The participants agreed on a draft strategy on resolving the problem of plastic waste, contributing to the Global Plastics Treaty.
