Addressing a meeting on the UNGA reform in New York on Wednesday, Minister Counselor Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, deputy head of Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, emphasized that reforming the UN General Assembly’s operations is crucial in improving the UN’s overall effectiveness and strengthening its ability to respond to growing global challenges.
He also highlighted that the UN General Assembly reform must align with the UN Charter, international law, and efforts to promote multilateralism, solidarity, and international cooperation, while avoiding politicization and confrontation.
The Vietnamese representative affirmed support for strengthening the role of the UN General Assembly in maintaining international peace and security and enhancing the relationship between the General Assembly and other key UN bodies, including the Security Council.
Vietnam supports the UN General Assembly reform that upholds principles of transparency and inclusiveness, particularly in the selection and appointment of the UN Secretary-General, co-chairs, and coordinators of General Assembly processes, taking into account gender and geographical balance, said Nguyen.
Vietnam is committed to making active contributions to the activities of the Special Working Group on the UN General Assembly reform during the 79th session, added the diplomat.
