This was Vietnam’s first conference on multilateral diplomacy – an important part of Vietnam’s foreign policy and the general trend in the 21st century. During discussions, the delegates outlined major trends of multilateral diplomacy in the 21st century, achievements and lessons from multilateral diplomacy in Vietnam’s renewal period, and newly-emerging requirements for Vietnam and ASEAN’s multilateral diplomacy.
Addressing the conference, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh called on government ministries and agencies to co-operate closely in conducting multilateral diplomatic activities, including hosting multilateral events, completing the ASEAN Community by 2015 and the ASEAN Post-2015 Vision, and tackling global challenges through multilateral diplomacy, in order to support Vietnam’s 2011 – 2020 socio-economic development strategy. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh said:
“Multilateral institutions and forums play an important role in the international arena as all nations have adjusted their foreign policies toward multilateral diplomacy, in order to support bilateral diplomacy. With experience shared by international friends and practical lessons learned in the 30 years of its renewal period, Vietnam will make the most of the advantages of multilateral diplomacy.”
