Vietnam, Tonga establish diplomatic ties
(VOVWORLD) - Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son and his Tongan counterpart Fekitamoeloa Utoikamanu witnessed the signing in New York on Thursday of a Joint Communiqué on the establishment of Vietnam-Tonga diplomatic ties by their heads of mission to the United Nations.

Minister Son called the event a historic milestone in the relationship between the two countries that lays a foundation for the future development of bilateral ties and meets the aspirations of their people for peace, cooperation, and friendship in the region and the world.
To harness the potential of bilateral cooperation, he proposed that both sides facilitate visits at all levels and consider the establishment of mechanisms for periodic bilateral exchanges to create a framework for long-term cooperation, especially in economics, trade, and tourism.
Minister Utoikamanu said there is a significant potential for bilateral collaboration. She urged both countries to step up cooperation in areas of mutual interest like tourism, climate change response, and aquaculture.
Vietnam now has diplomatic ties with 193 countries.
