The debate on the Western Sahara situation was briefed by Special Representative for Western Sahara and Head of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara Colin Stewart and Assistant Secretary-General for Africa Bintou Keita.
In his remarks at the event, Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, showed sympathy for struggling people in Western Sahara in the face of COVID-19. Humanitarian aid to these people should not be disrupted in such crisis, he said. He urged the concerned parties to foster peaceful dialogues based on related international rules and UNSC’s resolutions to seek fair and satisfactory solutions for the benefit of people in the region.
Other UNSC members also called on the parties to cooperate with the Special Representative for Western Sahara to resume peace talks and backed long-term and acceptable solutions for all parties.
