Topics for discussion included China’s illegal placement of an oilrig in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and relations between the two countries and their legislatures. Chairman Hung said that the Vietnamese Party, Government, National Assembly and people of Vietnam at home and abroad were determined to defend their national sovereignty and territorial integrity in line with international law. He said that Vietnam insisted on China withdrawing its oilrig from Vietnam’s territory. Mr. Hung said that Vietnam would persist with peaceful measures and called on the world to support Vietnam in its legitimate struggle. John Kline said that the US supported Vietnam’s stance on defending its sovereignty and hoped that all parties would settle the current situation with diplomacy and peaceful measures.

The two sides agreed on a number of measures to boost relations between the two countries and their legislatures. Bilateral cooperation will focus on science, education and healthcare as well as overcoming the consequences of agent orange/dioxin and the search for American servicemen missing in action during the war in Vietnam. John Kline said that the US was concerned about promoting trade cooperation with Vietnam and the early signing of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement.
