This is her first visit as US Vice President to Singapore and Vietnam, marking a new milestone in the US’s engagement in Southeast Asia.
Former Vietnamese Ambassador to the UN Ngo Quang Xuan said Harris’s visit to Vietnam is significant.
"US President Joe Biden’s administration considers Vietnam and Singapore to be major partners in maintaining a rules-based regional order," he said, "Biden and Harris agree that the top priority is to rebuild relationships with global partners. Ms. Harris is the current administration’s highest-ranking official to have visited Vietnam, which signals the US’s continued engagement in Southeast Asia.”

Mr. Xuan said Harris’s visit to Vietnam will help the two countries foster their comprehensive partnership in all fields, and create new cooperation opportunities for the future.
"This is a chance for the US to boost investment in high technology, the digital economy, smart cities, clean renewable energy, high-quality education, and fighting COVID-19 in Vietnam. So far, the US has given Vietnam 7 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine and a promise of continued support. Ms. Harris’s visit is an opportunity to discuss post-pandemic economic recovery, cyber security, and climate change," said Mr. Xuan.
Ambassador Xuan said relations between Vietnam and the US are supportive and complementary, with no competition or conflicts of interest.
