(VOVWORLD) - The United States attaches great importance to its relationship with Vietnam and supports a strong, independent, self-reliant and prosperous Vietnam with an increasingly important role in the region and the world.

These were the words of US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan spoken during a meeting with Vietnamese Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son in Washington D.C. on Monday.
Minister Son is visiting the US to co-chair the first annual dialogue between the foreign ministers of Vietnam and the US.
Mr. Sullivan said that the US will continue fulfilling agreements reached by leaders of the two countries and supporting Vietnam in high tech development, energy transition, climate change response, and the settlement of war aftermath to make bilateral relations more extensive, substantial and effective.
Minister Son underlined that Vietnam considers the US a partner of strategic importance. He suggested that the two sides continue expanding economic-trade and science-technology cooperation, especially in innovation and human resources training. He expressed the hope that the US will soon recognize Vietnam’s status as a market economy, and strengthen cooperation in war reparations.
At a meeting with Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Samantha Power the same day, Minister Son asked the agency to continue allocating resources for projects to remediate dioxin at Bien Hoa Airport, support the search for missing Vietnamese soldiers, enhance Vietnam’s capacity for DNA analysis, while helping war victims and persons with disabilities.
At the same time, the US should consider new areas for cooperation such as high-quality human resource training, climate change response, and energy transition, Minister Son said.
